Update Customs (Prohibition of Import & Export)

Dear esteemed members,

Update on Customs (Prohibition of Exports) Order 2012 and Custom (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2012

The recent roadshow conducted by MTIB with regards to the implementation of Customs (Prohibition of Exports) Order 2012 and Custom (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2012 (hereinafter collectively referred to as “the Customs Order 2012) has caught the industry by surprise.

There are also a rumour that the requirement for import and export license for furniture products and furniture components has been implemented.

Mr. Richard Ko, Secretariat General of MFC led a delegation to a meet with Secretary General of Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC), Y.Bhg. Datuk M. Nagarajan and MTIB Director General Dr. Jalaluddin Harun.

Datuk M. Nagarajan assured that Export License will NOT be required for exporting furniture. However, if furniture exporters would like to apply for the MYTLAS License, registration with MTIB is still required.

Meanwhile, furniture is exempted from Import License. However, the import of round logs, baulks and plywood will require Import License and legality documents from source country. This regulation is to fulfil the Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS) requirements.

The authorities has acknowledged the concern of the industry and shall new implementations be considered, the MFC will be called upon for consultation and will act in the best interest of the industry.
